Drupal took a more abstract approach than its contemporaries: nearly everything on a Drupal site is a “node,” organized afterward through taxonomy terms, and page regions are filled with independently configurable blocks. That flexibility made it less approachable out of the box than Mambo or Joomla, but it appealed strongly to universities, government agencies, NGOs and open-source projects that needed structured content more than a slick default theme. Drupal 6, released in February 2008, shipped with the Garland theme and is widely remembered as the version that cemented Drupal's reputation among technical site-builders.
