Joomla emerged in 2005 when Mambo's core developers split from that project, and quickly became its de facto successor. Version 1.5, released in early 2008, was a near-total rewrite and the version most people pictured when they thought of Joomla: breadcrumb navigation, print/PDF/email icons on every article, a tidy login module, and a two-sidebar layout built from modules around a central component. It became a default choice for small business and design-agency websites throughout the late 2000s, competing directly with WordPress as that platform grew more CMS-like.
