Mambo introduced a modular architecture of components, modules and templates that made it far more flexible than portal engines like PHP-Nuke, and for a time it was the go-to choice for small organizations and community sites that wanted a professional look without hiring a developer. In August 2005 a dispute over the project's governance led most of its core development team to leave and found Joomla, taking the bulk of the user base and active development with them. Mambo continued under its original foundation for a few more years before fading out.
