PHP-Nuke was among the first widely-distributed PHP portal engines, and it defined a visual template that an entire generation of news and community sites copied: a three-column layout with a central news feed flanked by blocks for polls, top downloads, a login form, and a running list of who was online. Its simplicity let anyone with FTP access run a portal. It fell out of favour by the mid-2000s, undermined by a reputation for poor security and overtaken by more modular systems like Mambo and Joomla.
