WordPress began as a blogging tool, a fork of the discontinued b2/cafelog, and the 2.x series is when it crossed over from hobbyist blogging software into something people used for small business sites and portfolios too. Its default theme, Kubrick — a blue header with a photographic sky and a clean two-column layout — became one of the most recognizable designs of the entire decade simply because so few people bothered to change it. Categories, a monthly archive widget, a blogroll and a comments section under every post were the standard furniture of a WordPress blog in this era.
