XOOPS began life as a fork of a PHP-Nuke-derived codebase, rebuilt around an object-oriented, module-based architecture rather than a single monolithic script. That made it a favourite for gaming clans and online communities that wanted a portal with forums, downloads and member profiles bolted together, but with more room to add custom modules than PHP-Nuke allowed. Its block-and-module system influenced later portal CMSes, though it was gradually eclipsed by Joomla and dedicated forum software as communities specialized rather than running everything from one portal.
