Why Flash Intros Still Won't Die Print

Every few months a new client asks us for an animated intro page with a "Skip Intro" button. We usually talk them out of it. Here is the speech.

An intro page is the one page on your site that every new visitor has to get past and that nobody comes to see. Search engines see a page with no text. Visitors on a slow connection see a loading bar. Regular customers see the same animation every single time.

The reasons clients give for wanting one are almost always good ones: they want the site to feel professional, or they want to show off a product. Both are better done with a strong home page and good photography.

If you really want movement, put a short slideshow on the home page itself, keep it under a few seconds and make sure the phone number is visible before it finishes loading.
