MyBB began in 2002 as MyBBoard and reached version 1.0 in December 2005. It was free to download at a time when the polished boards, vBulletin and Invision Power Board, cost money and phpBB 2 was showing its age. The default theme looked much like the commercial ones, with blue gradient table headers, and it shipped with things they charged for: a calendar, member reputation, polls, a portal page and an archive mode for search engines. Small hobby communities adopted it in large numbers. A volunteer team still develops it, now in the 1.8 series.
