phpBB was free, open-source, and ran almost anywhere a host offered PHP and MySQL, which made it the default choice for an enormous share of the web's small and mid-size communities. Its stock subSilver theme — grey and blue panels, a compact post layout with avatar and stats in a left-hand column, and a jumble of MSN/AIM/ICQ contact icons — is probably the single most recognisable forum design of the decade. Almost every gaming clan, hobby club and regional community had a phpBB board at some point.
