Simple Machines Forum grew out of the same YaBB community that had produced earlier free bulletin boards, and positioned itself as free, fast and clean at a time when vBulletin charged a licence fee and phpBB2 was starting to look dated. Its compact default theme put board statistics and a news strip right on the index page, alongside a tidy Recent Posts list, and it earned a loyal following among communities — photography clubs especially — that wanted something a step up from phpBB without the visual bulk of vBulletin.
