MediaWiki was written to run Wikipedia, and its success there made it the default choice for anyone who wanted a collaborative encyclopedia of their own. The MonoBook skin — a grey sidebar with navigation and search, tabs for Article, Discussion, Edit and History along the top, and a left-aligned Contents box floated inside long articles — is still instantly recognizable as “what a wiki looks like” to anyone who used the web in this period, even on sites with no connection to Wikipedia itself.
