osCommerce was free, came with a working shopping cart out of the box, and asked for nothing but a MySQL database and FTP access, which made it the easiest way for a small retailer to sell online without touching a dedicated e-commerce platform. Its storefront template — a left column of Categories and Manufacturers, a What's New? box, a Bestsellers list, and a currency selector in the corner — was reused on thousands of independent shops. It was eventually overtaken by Magento and, later, hosted platforms, but for much of the 2000s it was simply what a small online store looked like.
