A Short Guide to Favicon Design PDF Print E-mail

The little icon in the address bar and the bookmarks menu is sixteen pixels square, and most companies use a shrunken copy of their full logo. It rarely works. A few tips from the last dozen we have drawn.

  • Use one letter or one shape from the logo, not the whole thing.
  • Draw it at 16 by 16 pixels, pixel by pixel. Don't just resize.
  • Check it on a white and a grey background, since browsers show both.
  • Save it as a real .ico file in the root of the site so older browsers find it.
