There is no single right answer, but most members recommend Mandrake or Fedora Core for a first install. Both have graphical installers, detect most hardware and come with everything you need on a few CDs.

If you just want to look around without installing anything, start with a Knoppix CD. If you have an old machine with little memory, try Debian or Slackware with a light window manager. SUSE is popular too, and the Personal edition is a free download.

Whatever you pick, pick the one your friends use. Help from someone who runs the same thing is worth more than any feature list.
