Core i7 / Nehalem -- November launch, X58 and DDR3 prices

Postby Trip_Wire on Thu Oct 02, 2008 2:05 pm

Intel's launching Core i7 in November. What's leaked:

  • i7 920 (2.66GHz), 940 (2.93GHz), 965 Extreme (3.2GHz)
  • Prices around $284, $562 and $999
  • New socket (LGA1366), new chipset (X58), triple-channel DDR3 only
  • Hyper-Threading is back

The CPU price is fine, the platform isn't. X58 boards supposedly start at $250-300 and 6GB of DDR3 isn't cheap either.

The 920 is going to be the new Q6600. Everyone will run it at 3.8GHz on air.

For gaming, my E8400 isn't going anywhere. Games barely use two cores, let alone eight threads.

For now. But yeah, if you're on a C2D at 3.6+ there's nothing in i7 for you this year.

Compiling at work would love it though. Eight threads for make -j8.

What's AMD doing? Anything to compete?

45nm Phenom II, supposedly early next year. Until then the Phenom 9950 is fine and cheap, but no competition at the top.

Reviews should come out early November. I'll spend my lunch breaks refreshing AnandTech.
