 | XFree86 4.4.0 Ships Under New License |
kernel_tinkerer writes "XFree86 4.4.0 is out, and the release notes are getting less attention than the license. The project has moved to the XFree86 License 1.1, which adds a credit clause that the FSF says is incompatible with the GPL. Debian, Red Hat, Mandrake and Gentoo have all said they will not ship 4.4.0 under these terms.
Most distributions are sticking with 4.3.0 plus their own patches for now. The X.Org Foundation, formed in January, and the X server work going on at freedesktop.org are the obvious places for distributions to go next, and several vendors have hinted that is where they are looking.
For users nothing changes today: 4.3.0 keeps working, and your nvidia driver does not care either way."
