Mozilla's Firefox Preview Release came out on Tuesday and has been making the rounds of the mailing list all week. It's still pre-1.0 and rough around a few edges, but tabbed browsing and the built-in popup blocker have already won over a few of our Internet Explorer holdouts. The Preview Release is version 0.10 and runs on Linux, Windows and Mac OS X. On Linux it installs into your home directory from a tarball, so you don't need root to try it, and it can import your bookmarks from Mozilla or Netscape the first time it starts. Things people on the list have liked so far: the Live Bookmarks feature for RSS feeds, the find bar that appears at the bottom of the window instead of a dialog box, and the fact that it starts noticeably faster than the full Mozilla suite. Things they haven't: a few extensions written for 0.9 don't work yet, and the Windows installer still asks a couple of confusing questions. A full 1.0 release is expected before the end of the year. We'll have it on the CD table at the October meeting for anyone without broadband. |
