With Windows XP Service Pack 2 now going out through Automatic Updates, a couple of members have reported network card and firewall conflicts after installing it on older hardware. If you're planning to upgrade, check your device vendor's site for updated drivers first, and back up before you start. Yes, this is a Linux group, but most of us still have a Windows machine somewhere in the house, and the dual-boot boxes from the install-fests are affected too. The two problems we've heard about most:
- An older 3Com PCI network card that stopped working until the driver was updated.
- The new Windows Firewall blocking file sharing to a Samba server on the home network. Turning on the File and Printer Sharing exception in the firewall settings fixed it.
If SP2 has broken something on your machine, bring it to the next meeting and we'll take a look. |
